For years, the question of whether an image, video, or piece of text was generated by AI was treated as a curiosity. In 2026, it is a legal question — and increasingly, the wrong answer comes with fines.

A wave of disclosure regulations is landing simultaneously across three continents. The EU’s AI Act Article 50 deadline arrives in August 2026. China’s labeling rules took effect in September 2025. In the United States, 27 state AI laws have been enacted since 2022, and 146 new bills were introduced in 2025 alone. Meanwhile, every major social platform — YouTube, Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn — has deployed its own mandatory disclosure tools, some with immediate strike penalties for non-compliance.

Taken together, these rules are rewriting the compliance obligations of anyone who produces, distributes, or publishes AI-generated content at scale.

What the EU AI Act Requires
