7. Implement Human Oversight Mechanisms in the Product

Deployers of high-risk AI systems must retain the system’s automatically generated logs for a minimum of six months under Article 12. For non-EU providers who are also the deployers (e.g., a SaaS company that both builds and operates the AI system for its customers), this obligation falls directly on the provider. Logs must be structured, tamper-resistant, and sufficient to reconstruct the system’s operation and outputs during any compliance inquiry.
For cloud-native providers, this means logging at the inference layer: timestamp, user context, model version, input parameters, output values, and decision outcomes. Six-month retention in a tamper-resistant storage system (object storage with integrity checksums, not application-level logs that can be modified) is the minimum viable architecture.

The August 2, 2026 date is stable for most high-risk categories, though parliamentary discussions as of April 2026 include proposals to extend some deadlines to December 2027 and August 2028 — pending Council approval.
