An Industry That Cannot Hire Itself

The technology industry — the same industry that prides itself on data-driven decision making, rigorous A/B testing, and optimization of every conceivable metric — uses a hiring process with remarkably weak predictive validity. This is not hyperbole. Multiple studies and legal complaints have documented significant bias in AI interview tools: research shows word error rates as high as 22% for Chinese-accented speakers compared to 10% for native English speakers, and the ACLU filed a complaint in 2025 alleging that HireVue’s AI systems disadvantage deaf and non-white applicants. Stanford researchers found in 2025 that AI resume-screening tools systematically favored older male candidates over equally qualified female candidates.
